Why location signs matter
In an emergency, people need to find equipment fast, often from across a room or down a corridor. AS 2444 covers the location and identification of portable extinguishers and fire blankets, including location signs. A sign above the equipment makes it visible even when the unit is behind furniture or people.
Choosing the right sign
Pick the sign for the equipment type (extinguisher, fire blanket, hose reel or combined), then the format that fits the wall above it. Vinyl suits painted walls and smooth surfaces, while ACP and aluminium give a rigid, premium finish for lobbies, carparks and outdoor areas.
Materials and finishing
Every sign is made to order in Penrith NSW and matt-laminated for glare-free reading. Choose the material to suit where it's going:
- Vinyl sticker for smooth indoor surfaces such as doors, glass, walls and equipment.
- Corflute for lightweight outdoor signs on fencing, hoarding and short to medium-term projects.
- Aluminium composite panel (ACP) for a rigid, flat, premium finish on walls, gates and posts.
- Aluminium for the toughest outdoor locations and long service life.
Each material is available reflective or non-reflective, with finishing options such as eyelets, double-sided tape, pre-drilled holes or post-mount holes on most signs.

Compliance note
Requirements vary by state, building class and site. Your certifier, fire safety engineer, WHS regulator or local authority has the final say on which signs you need and where they go.
Frequently asked questions
Should the sign go above or beside the extinguisher?
Location signs are normally mounted above the equipment so they can be seen from a distance. Your fire services contractor can confirm the right height for your site.
